Leonard, San Diego State University, reports that a CCD spectrum (range 510-880 nm) of SN 2006cr (cf. CBET 530), obtained on June 1 UT with the Keck I 10-m telescope (+ LRISp), shows it to be young type-II supernova. The spectrum is similar to that of SN 1999em about 1 week after explosion (Leonard et al. 2002, PASP 114, 35), consisting of a blue continuum with a broad P-Cyg profile from H_alpha in net emission, along with He I 587.6-nm. Interstellar Na I D absorption at the redshift of UGC 8205 with an equivalent width of roughly 0.11 nm is detected in the spectrum of SN 2006cr, indicating gas along the line-of-sight in the host and thus suggesting reddening by dust.
