Electronic Telegram No. 970 Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION M.S. 18, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, MA 02138, U.S.A. IAUSUBS@CFA.HARVARD.EDU or FAX 617-495-7231 (subscriptions) CBAT@CFA.HARVARD.EDU (science) URL http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/iau/cbat.html POSSIBLE SUPERNOVA IN MCG +05-43-16 T. Boles, Coddenham, England, reports the discovery of a possible supernova (mag 18.5) on an unfiltered CCD image taken on May 19.037 UT with a 0.35-m reflector. The new object is located at R.A. = 18h23m05s.59 +/- 0s.01, Decl. = +29o54'01".0 +/- 0".2 (equinox 2000.0), which is approximately 17".9 east and 4".2 south of the center of MCG +05-43-16. Nothing is visible at this location on Boles' images from 2006 June 30 and Sept. 18 (limiting mag 19.5) or on Digitized Sky Survey plates from 1989 May 3 (limiting red mag 20.5) and 1990 July 22 (limiting blue mag 21.0), though there is a faint stellar object or compact luminous area of mag 20.5 within 1" of the possible supernova. A confirming image of the variable object by Boles from May 19.973 yielded mag 18.3. Following posting on the Central Bureau's unconfirmed-objects webpage, D. Balam (Dept. of Physics and Astronomy, University of Victoria) writes that A. Domokos and P. Wiegert obtained three V-band images with the 1.82-m Plaskett Telescope of the National Research Council of Canada, which show that there is indeed a new point source of magnitude V = 17.98 (+/- 0.03) located at the above position, remarking that nothing is visible at this position on the Palomar Sky Survey II.
